Sudan cholera outbreak kills 40 in a week as health centres overwhelmed
Briefly

Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak, with at least 40 fatalities reported in the last week. Medical facilities are overwhelmed, leading to patients being treated on mattresses on the floor. Families in displacement camps are forced to drink contaminated water, which is the primary cause of the cholera outbreak. Since the outbreak's confirmation a year ago, there have been over 99,700 suspected cases and more than 2,470 deaths related to cholera. Heavy rains, combined with ongoing conflict, continue to exacerbate the situation and worsen sanitation issues in the region.
The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres reported at least 40 deaths from cholera in Sudan, worsened by a civil war and contaminated water sources.
In August, a 130-bed treatment center had to accommodate 400 cholera patients in Tawila, highlighting the overwhelming demand on medical facilities.
Over 99,700 suspected cholera cases have been reported in Sudan since the outbreak was confirmed, exacerbated by heavy rains and conflict-related displacement.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control noted that African countries, including Sudan, represent a significant percentage of global cholera cases and deaths.
