"So here I am like, 'Oh my goodness. I have this baby on the way, and now I have no job,'"
"They were able to cover baby formula, which is huge. They gave us like 10 or 12 cans each [month]. That still didn't cover everything that my child needed, but it covered a lot."
"The prices of milk, the prices of eggs, prices of bread. All of these things are, like, astronomical. So it would be a huge hit to us."
Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits will not be affected by the federal shutdown. Nutrition assistance through WIC could be among the first programs to face disruption. WIC serves nearly 7 million people, including almost half of U.S. infants, and provides formula, breastfeeding support, nutrition counseling and benefits for children up to age five. Participants receive items such as $26 monthly fruit-and-vegetable benefits and WIC-approved groceries. Pregnant women and new parents who rely on WIC report that formula coverage and grocery benefits were essential amid rising food prices. Congress has not passed a new budget, leaving agencies without new spending authority.
