More than 20,000 participants took part in the 22nd annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on the Coney Island boardwalk. Participants completed three- to five-mile walks along the boardwalk to raise awareness and support for breast cancer research. A seven-year breast cancer survivor emphasized the emotional impact of visible support from family, friends and strangers. The American Cancer Society reports that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States aside from skin cancers. Over 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed this year.
