On August 9, 2024, a devastating landslide in Kiteezi, Uganda, buried more than 70 houses, causing 34 fatalities and leaving over 220 residents homeless. Zamhall Nansamba, recalling the event, described hearing a noise before witnessing trees and rubbish approaching her home. Despite her luck in escaping with her children, the community has struggled significantly since then. Many families, including Nansamba's, are unable to relocate due to financial constraints and continue to face dire living conditions as they cope with their losses.
Zamhall Nansamba recounts the terrifying moment the avalanche of rubbish descended, stating, “When I heard a noise I went outside. I saw the trees and the rubbish coming.”
The landslide left over 220 residents homeless, and 34 bodies were recovered, with more than 20 still missing. The community faced a devastating loss of life.
