WHO agrees legally binding pandemic treaty
Briefly

Members of the World Health Organization (WHO) have finalized a legally binding treaty aimed at better managing future pandemics. This agreement focuses on crucial elements like rapid data sharing and oversight of global supply chains for essential medical supplies. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros highlighted the pact as a monumental achievement in promoting global safety. After three years of negotiations, this treaty marks only the second such agreement in the WHO's history, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration in public health emergencies.
For the first time, the WHO itself will also have an overview of global supply chains for masks, medical gowns and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the deal as 'a significant milestone in our shared journey towards a safer world'.
This legally binding pact is only the second time in the WHO's 75-year history that an international agreement of this type has been reached.
Countries will have to ensure that pandemic-related drugs are available across the world in a future outbreak.
