Approximately 42 million people in the United States are facing delayed SNAP benefits, which are normally paid over the first ten days of the month. Hundreds of thousands in the Bay Area rely on CalFresh, and CalFresh is directing people to local food banks. Benefit delays force families to choose between rent, medicine and food. Bay Area restaurants, beginning with an Oct. 24 post by Tony & Alba’s Pizza and Pasta, are providing free or discounted meals to CalFresh recipients. Monster Phở is offering free meals to CalFresh recipients ages 12 and under and will hold a Nov. 24 Phở for the People event with a toy drive. Governor Newsom announced fast-tracking roughly $80 million in state support and activation of the National Guard to assist food banks, while food banks report increased pressure and heightened hunger levels.
