The World Health Organization (WHO) expects to secure over $2.6 billion in funding for the 2026-2027 budget, due to increased member dues, but faces a $1.7 billion gap. Director-General Tedros highlighted the necessity of a $4.2 billion budget to effectively serve global health needs. He criticized the comparison of WHO's budget with that of a single hospital, underscoring the challenges posed by funding cuts and the need for resilience, particularly in the context of recent health crises.
"At current exchange rates, the HUG hospital here in Geneva operates on the same budget-slightly larger than WHO, in fact," Tedros noted.
"Extremely difficult and painful decision for me," Tedros described the cuts needed for WHO's budget.
"How can WHO be expected to serve the whole world on the same budget as one hospital in a mid-sized European city?" Tedros questioned.
"US$ 4.2 billion dollars-or US$ 2.1 billion a year-is not ambitious," Tedros asserted about the WHO's budget needs.
