After tragedy shut it down, a Tahoe winter icon to reopen
"Lost Trail Lodge is the kind of place that takes effort to reach - it's located deep in Coldstream Canyon, outside the town of Truckee, not far as the crow flies from the backside of Sugar Bowl ski area. In the summer, you can drive 4 miles down a dirt road to get here, but in the snowy season, you'll need to ski, snowshoe or snowmobile your way in. Which makes arriving at this four-bedroom, off-the-grid lodge with a chef's kitchen even more rewarding."
"Once a popular Tahoe-area backcountry destination, the lodge has been closed to visitors since 2022, following the tragic death of 16-year-old Kiely Rodni, the granddaughter of the lodge's original owner, David Robertson. This week, after years of being on the market, the lodge has officially sold to a new owner, Campfire Ranch, a Colorado-based lodging outfitter. Campfire Ranch operates a full-service campground outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, a backcountry hut on Red Mountain Pass near Silverton, Colorado, and a newly opened mountain bike lodge in northwest Arkansas."
"The new owners say they plan to open for bookings soon and will be accepting visitors starting this winter, with the plan to keep the lodge open year-round. For guided backcountry ski experiences, you'll need to partner with a local guiding outfitter. Also, Pacific Crest Snowcats operates on adjacent terrain. Summertime recreation around the lodge includes hiking, mountain biking and fly fishing."
""I grew up skiing in Tahoe and I've always been drawn to the area," said Sam Degenhard, CEO and founder of Campfire Ranch. "But Tahoe can get busy, so the trick is finding a place on the outskirts with abundant recreation where you can get away from the crowds.""
Lost Trail Lodge sits deep in Coldstream Canyon near Truckee, reachable by a 4-mile dirt road in summer and only by ski, snowshoe or snowmobile in winter. The four-bedroom, off-the-grid property includes a chef's kitchen and 3,800 square feet on 2.5 acres. The lodge closed to visitors in 2022 after the tragic death of a family member and has since sold to Campfire Ranch, a Colorado-based outfitter. Campfire Ranch plans to operate the property as Campfire Ranch Lost Trail, accept bookings starting this winter, and keep it open year-round with guided backcountry ski partnerships and adjacent snowcat terrain; summer activities include hiking, mountain biking and fly fishing.
