L.A.'s famous 'Hobbit Houses' have a new owner. He calls himself the 'King of Storybook'
""It's like a companion piece to my own home," Libow said."
""It's a little oasis in a city that's been overdeveloped.""
""King of Storybook,""
The Hobbit Houses sit on a quiet street at the edge of Los Angeles and Culver City, constructed from old clinker bricks and jumbled shingles by Disney artist Lawrence Joseph and his wife over three decades. The complex features an electric lamppost that flickers like fire, a front-yard tree with a carved face, quirky leaded glass windows, uneven angles and heaps of wood shingles resembling a thatched roof. The homes contrast with surrounding modern, boxy apartment buildings along Venice Boulevard. The property sold to real estate agent Michael Libow for $1.88 million; Libow intends to protect and promote Storybook-style architecture.
