The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture complaint against over $7.74 million in cryptocurrency and other digital assets connected to a North Korean IT worker scheme. This scheme, which has reportedly been operational since 2017, utilized fake identities and AI tools like ChatGPT to gain employment at U.S. companies, helping North Korea bypass sanctions. The funds are linked to a North Korean bank representative, highlighting how the operation is strategically designed to generate revenue for Pyongyang and further its military objectives.
"For years, North Korea has exploited global remote IT contracting and cryptocurrency ecosystems to evade U.S. sanctions and bankroll its weapons programs," said Sue J. Bai, Head of the Justice Department's National Security Division.
The fraudulent scheme has evolved into a massive operation since its origins way back in 2017... to bypass due diligence checks and secure freelance jobs.
