England football star Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international duty with the Lionesses to focus on her health and extend her club career. The 31-year-old, who made 77 appearances and scored 19 goals for her country, felt it was the right time to step away after discussions with manager Sarina Wiegman. Kirby's decision followed her understanding that she would not be part of the squad for the upcoming Euros, leading her to prioritize opportunities for younger players and her personal wellbeing.
I think obviously it's a decision that I've thought about for a while. There are many factors to be honest. I think mentally being at the age I am at and being here for 11 years, you get to a point, you know, enough is enough.
When I had the conversation with Sarina and you know, she laid her plans out for the Euros, and she told me I wasn't going, unless someone got injured, I knew it was the moment where I'd outstayed my welcome.
