Another Round of Congressional GOP Infighting Begins
Briefly

As the Memorial Day recess approaches, House Speaker Mike Johnson grapples with considerable internal GOP tensions over the budget reconciliation mega-bill. Initially, Johnson anticipated that the House would finalize its budget work by late April, but continuous delays pushed this target back to early May and beyond. Disagreements among Republicans about key provisions, such as increasing SALT deductions and Medicaid cuts, are surfacing. A notable conflict arose over a proposed $20 fee on gas vehicles, which led to backlash from party members, showcasing the fractures within GOP solidarity.
"Like, are you out of your fricking mind?" Rep. Chip Roy, (R-TX) said of the fee. "The party of limited government is gonna go out and, 'Say we're gonna have [a car tax]?"
Johnson had initially claimed that the House could wrap up its reconciliation tasks by late April, but deadlines keep slipping further back.
