A century after a failed attempt to combat Mussolini's fascism through an open letter, more than 400 contemporary scholars are raising alarms over the resurgence of far-right movements. These movements exhibit traits reminiscent of early 20th-century authoritarianism, including nationalism, attacks on democratic norms, and repression of dissent. The 2025 letter, akin to the original 1925 manifesto, seeks to mobilize international awareness against renewed fascistic forces, highlighted by political events like the Ukraine invasion, U.S. Capitol riots, and global crackdowns on free speech and democratic principles.
In the past two decades we have witnessed a renewed wave of far-right movements,... attacks on democratic norms and institutions, a reinvigorated nationalism laced with racist rhetoric.
The open letter...was inspired by rising influence of, as they see it, a growing roster of would-be demagogues and dictators around the world.
