Ben Flanagan wins Canadian men's title at Toronto Waterfront Marathon in debut | CBC Sports
Ben Flanagan won the Canadian title in his marathon debut at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, finishing in 2:15:39 on a warm, windy morning. Flanagan pulled away from Andrew Alexander around the 25-kilometre mark and ran the final 17.2 km alone. He finished 10th overall, seven minutes behind winner Leonard Langat, who led a Kenyan sweep with a 2:08:04 victory. Phil Parrot-Migas and Andrew Alexander were the next top Canadian finishers. Flanagan dealt with a shorter-than-desired marathon build after recovering from a partially torn labrum in his left hip and believes he can go faster despite strong winds.
"I'm so happy, but my body was plummeting the last 3K, the Kitchener, Ont., native told race organizer Canada Running Series. To [win] with the wind [gusting to 53 km per hour], I feel I can go faster. Main goal was to finish, win and learn from the mistakes I made in the build, in the race, and get better from here."
"I was lucky I got far enough away that it didn't matter [at the end of the race], said Flanagan, whose marathon build was shorter than he wanted after recovering from a partially torn labrum in his left hip joint."
