RFE/RL Contributor Vladyslav Yesypenko Released From Russian Custody After More Than Four Years Of Detention
Briefly

Ukrainian journalist Vladyslav Yesypenko was released from Russian custody after being imprisoned for over four years on fabricated espionage charges. Arrested in March 2021, Yesypenko faced a six-year sentence based on evidence denounced as faked, including torture allegations to extract false confessions. His case highlights the brutal conditions faced by journalists in Crimea under Russian occupation. Following a reduced sentence, Yesypenko's release allows for a reunion with his family, while calls for accountability against his torturers continue, alongside sanctions from the European Union on involved Russian officials.
For more than four years, Vlad was arbitrarily punished for a crime he did not commit. He paid too high of a price for reporting the truth about what was taking place inside Russia-occupied Crimea.
He was tortured, physically and psychologically. While we celebrate his joyous reunion with his wife Kateryna, and their young daughter Stefania, we cannot overlook this family's pain at the hands of Russian authorities.
