US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the war in Ukraine needs to end after speaking with Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. Rubio referenced weekend strikes on Kyiv and repeated warnings of more attacks, calling the war terrible and longer than World War II. Rubio said Lavrov wanted to reiterate warnings to the United States to pull diplomats from Kyiv, while Rubio suggested the warning was downplayed and framed as notices to embassies. Rubio cautioned that continued wars carry a threat of escalation and spreading into something new. Rubio also said Lavrov intended to relay a message from Vladimir Putin to Donald Trump without providing details. Several European diplomats said they would remain in Kyiv despite the warnings.
