NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the urgent need for Europe to significantly enhance its defense capabilities in light of Russia's rapid military production. He remarked that Russia's output of ammunition in three months exceeds NATO's annual production, highlighting a stark imbalance. Rutte pointed out that Russia is reconstituting forces quickly with international support, particularly from China and North Korea. He advocated for a substantial increase in forces and capabilities to effectively implement NATO defense strategies and counter the growing military threat posed by Russia.
"In terms of ammunition, Russia produces in three months what the whole of NATO produces in a year," he said.
"We must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defense plans in full."
Russia has massively ramped up its weapons and ammunition production to fuel its war against Ukraine, placing its economy on a war footing.
Rutte called for a 'quantum leap' in how Europe defends itself.
