Sean Penn receives Oscar' made from damaged Ukrainian rail carriage after Zelenskyy meeting
"You're missing Oscars, so we made this one. It's not golden but it's very real and from the bottom of our hearts. These are all treasures, thank you."
"This is for you. It's just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you then I'll feel better and stronger for the fight. When you win, bring it back to Malibu. I'll feel much better knowing a piece of me is here."
Sean Penn skipped the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles where he won his third Oscar for best supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. Instead, he traveled to Ukraine, where he was presented with a specially crafted Oscar fashioned from metal salvaged from a Ukrainian railway carriage damaged by Russian missiles. The statue was given to him by Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, CEO of Ukrainian railways, who explained the symbolic gesture. Penn has maintained a strong commitment to Ukraine since Russia's invasion four years ago, previously loaning one of his Oscars to President Zelenskyy in 2022 and creating a documentary about the president in 2023.
