Australia's first housing co-op dedicated to trans women has received significant government funding, totaling AUD 4.2 million from both state and federal sources, to refurbish properties aimed at providing affordable housing. All Nations Housing Co-Operative, launched 14 years ago, emphasizes community-led solutions to tackle homelessness and signifies a progressive shift in addressing the housing crisis faced by the trans community, where nearly 20% of trans youth have experienced homelessness. Community partnerships and funding are recognized as pivotal in achieving these life-saving housing solutions.
Achieving secure, affordable housing is life-saving for our community. Our story shows that community-led housing, grounded in lived experience and built on strong partnerships, can break new ground.
We are so gratified that Government, at all levels, heard us and understood the need for this group of trans people.
