In June, the San Francisco Public Library emphasizes LGBTQ+ stories for all ages, featuring a variety of books that validate and represent LGBTQIA experiences. Children's librarians note the importance of creating a collection that mirrors the community, helping young readers, especially non-binary kids, see themselves in literature. With a display of over 120 LGBTQ+ books at the Fisher Children's Center and programs at the Hormel LGBTQIA Center, the library serves as a sanctuary for diverse experiences, encouraging learning and connection within the community.
There are so many great books for kids about LGBTQIA families and kids and communities, we want our collection to represent our community, we like to call that a mirror.
It's really nice for kids that are non-binary to see themselves in a book. There's a validation that's really important.
The goal here at the center is to just to be a reflection pool for our community, a place where you can come in and find that sanctuary.
It's just so important to have these things that can validate your experience and let you know you're not alone.
