Trans youth as consistent in their identity as cis youth, study shows
Briefly

A study by the Society for Research in Child Development found that gender identity and sexuality remain stable traits for over 80% of youth, both transgender and cisgender. The research, conducted between 2013 and 2024, included more than 900 participants. It noted that any changes in identity frequently involved non-binary identification rather than a return to the assigned gender at birth. Additionally, it reported high rates of LGBTQ+ self-identification among youth, suggesting shifts in perceptions of gender and sexuality. These findings challenge traditional notions in developmental psychology regarding identity stability.
More than 80 per cent remained consistently comfortable in their expressed gender identity, including those who had transitioned during childhood, and trans children were shown to be "no more or less likely" to show or express regret than their cisgender peers.
The study also observed "high rates" of youngsters self-reporting as having LGBTQ+ sexual orientation, which implied a "substantial shift toward flexibility in thinking about gender and sexuality among today's youth."
