A fast-growing Georgia wildfire tops 31 square miles, with evacuations possible
"The fire basically doubled last night in size. It is a dynamic fire event that will be impacted by the wind. It's going to be another potential bad fire day as the winds pick up later in the day."
"There's a ton of assets that are being poured into this fire to, hopefully, get it under control or get it out. This whole situation is heartbreaking."
The Highway 82 Fire in southeastern Georgia has expanded significantly, now covering over 31 square miles and destroying at least 87 homes. As of Sunday, it is only 7% contained, with wind gusts expected to exacerbate the situation. Evacuation notices may be issued, as previous residents who did not evacuate faced danger. A second fire in Clinch and Echols counties has burned over 46 square miles and is 10% contained. The Highway 82 fire was ignited by a foil balloon contacting power lines, while the second fire was caused by welding sparks.
