BUSD avoids mass layoffs, but tough budget decisions ahead
Briefly

After facing an $8 million budget deficit, Berkeley Unified School District proposed major staff reductions. This led to community pushback at school board meetings, resulting in the rescinding of 166 out of 204 layoff notices sent to employees. Temporary roles and positions funded by soft dollars remain under consideration. The school board is scheduled to vote on a final budget for the 2025-2026 school year in June, with board members describing this budget cycle as particularly challenging.

School Board Director Ana Vasudeo acknowledged the challenges of the current budget cycle, describing this year’s budget process as the hardest she’s faced on the board.
