Family welcomes home Livermore World War II vet who died 81 years ago: 'This is where you belong'
Briefly

After 81 years of uncertainty, the remains of WWII veteran Lt. Thomas Kelly were finally returned to his family in Livermore, California. Kelly, who was shot down during a mission in 1944, was declared Missing In Action, leaving his family without closure. Sandy Althaus, his first cousin, vividly remembers him and described how the tragedy affected their family. Scott Althaus, Sandy's son, began a 12-year quest to find his cousin's remains through research and collaboration with Project Recover, culminating in their recent return home and providing the family with the closure they long sought.
"When there is an MIA, Missing In Action, there is no body coming home to bury. It caused our family to believe he was dead. But now we have the closure. So now he is home."
