Tiffany Slaton, a Georgia hiker, was found just before her 28th birthday after surviving three weeks alone in the Sierra National Forest amidst a blizzard. Having set off for a cross-country journey on an electric bike, she went missing after last being seen on April 24. Her family reported her absence nine days later. Thanks to public tips, investigators traced her possible location. Eventually, she was found at the Vermilion Valley Resort, where the owner, Christopher Gutierrez, had left a cabin open for stranded travelers. Slaton was hospitalized, but in good health.
According to Fresno County Sheriff's spokesperson Tony Botti, three weeks in such conditions is unheard of. It speaks to the tenacity that Tiffany has, that she's a fighter.
Tiffany's mother stated that it was Gutierrez's decision to leave the cabin unlocked that made the difference: Without that, I don't think we would be having a happy ending.
When Tiffany later called her father, saying Dad, I'm alive, and I'm sorry, he described it as the third or fourth best day of our lives after our children's birth.
Slaton was reported missing after her parents hadn't heard from her for nine days, which led to a comprehensive search effort, aided by public tips.
