The 'Saturday Night Lights' program in San Jose, a partnership among the San Jose Earthquakes, Catholic Charities, and local authorities, has shown promising results after a successful 10-week pilot. Engaging 220 middle and high school students in futsal, the initiative aimed to curb teen gang violence amidst growing concerns. All participants completed the program, resulting in a 30% increase in attendance at LeyVa Middle School and no reported disciplinary incidents. The program fostered leadership and camaraderie, proving effective in creating a positive community impact during a challenging time.
I think what it allowed them to do is to come together to learn those lessons but also realize that they're kids, and they get a chance to play.
The feedback that they gave to us is that it provided leadership opportunities caused what we found is that older kids were leaned in to help the younger kids.
