Spain: German couple arrested for locking up their children DW 04/30/2025
Briefly

In April 2025, Spanish authorities rescued three young children—an 8-year-old twin and a 10-year-old boy—from a house in Oviedo that had been their prison since December 2021. A concerned neighbor alerted the police after noticing their absence from school. Descriptions of their living conditions were harrowing, with the house filled with garbage, and the children confined to caged beds without access to natural sunlight or outside interaction. The children were placed in protective care, and a German couple responsible for their captivity was arrested.
The police described the children’s dwelling as a 'house of horror', where they were locked up since December 2021, suffering severe neglect and abuse.
Chief Superintendent Francisco Javier Lozano condemned the conditions, highlighting that the children were isolated, slept in caged beds, and lived in an environment filled with trash.
