Special education students at CSU East Bay denied commencement walk
Briefly

CSU East Bay's first graduating cohort from its Think by the Bay program, designed for students with intellectual disabilities, was denied participation in the commencement ceremony. Despite advocacy efforts and a petition signed by hundreds to allow these graduates to walk, the university cited a lack of advance notice as the reason for their exclusion. Officials confirmed that only students receiving formal academic degrees could participate, prompting criticism about the institution's commitment to inclusivity. Alternative recognition efforts have reportedly fallen flat, intensifying concerns from advocates.
The university launched Think by the Bay in 2023, aimed at providing students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the skills necessary for future employment and independence.
Kristin Vogel-Campbell stated that excluding these students from graduation undermines CSU East Bay's mission of inclusivity despite the school offering a photo-op.
