Detectives arrested two men aged 48 and 35 at separate locations in north-east Victoria as part of Operation Summit, an investigation into Dezi Freeman’s movements after shootings at Porepunkah. The men will be interviewed by police, and the investigation remains ongoing. Freeman shot and killed Det Leading Sen Const Neal Thompson and Sen Const Vadim De Waart-Hottart, and injured a third officer during an incident at a property near Porepunkah in August. The officers were executing a search warrant on 26 August after receiving disclosure involving an alleged sexual assault of a child under 16 and an attempt to involve a child in production of child abuse material. Freeman fled heavily armed into the bush, leading to a seven-month manhunt that ended when he died after being shot by police on 30 March near the Victoria-New South Wales border. The arrests followed coroner’s court directions hearings related to the officers’ deaths and Freeman’s final shootout.
