Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended President Trump's decision to federalize the California National Guard after violent unrest in Los Angeles. Noem criticized Democratic leaders, particularly Governor Gavin Newsom, for their inadequate response to public safety concerns. She stated that intervention was necessary due to escalating violence and referenced past failures of governors to maintain order during similar crises. Newsom, however, argued that local law enforcement was sufficient to manage the situation and accused the Trump administration of seeking publicity. Noem countered, highlighting serious threats faced by law enforcement and the need for federal assistance to restore peace.
If [Newsom] was doing his job, then people wouldn't have gotten hurt the last couple of days... We wouldn't have officers with shattered wrists from bricks being thrown.
Governor Newsom has proven that he makes bad decisions... That's one of the reasons why these National Guard soldiers are being federalized.
