PBS has initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration over an executive order aimed at eliminating federal funding for public media. The lawsuit, filed in a Washington, DC court, contends that the administration’s actions constitute a violation of the First Amendment by targeting PBS based on its content. According to PBS, CPB grants represent 16% of its budget, and they seek relief from what they claim is unconstitutional action that infringes on their editorial independence, a concern echoed by NPR in a similar complaint.
The EO makes no attempt to hide the fact that it is cutting off the flow of funds to PBS because of the content of PBS programming and out of a desire to alter the content of speech.
After careful deliberation, PBS reached the conclusion that it was necessary to take legal action to safeguard public television's editorial independence, and to protect the autonomy of PBS member stations.
