Senegal lawmakers elect ousted PM Sonko as new parliament speaker

Senegal’s parliament elected Ousmane Sonko as speaker after he had been dismissed as prime minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Lawmakers reinstated Sonko as a member and voted to elect him with 132 votes in favour, with no votes against and one abstention. Sonko, leader of Pastef, controls a large share of seats in the legislature, giving him a powerful platform to contest the president’s agenda. The main opposition denounced the move as an institutional coup and argued Sonko should have resigned to sit in parliament before returning to government. President Faye had appointed Sonko prime minister in April 2024 and later dissolved the cabinet amid a debt crisis and growing political tensions.
