"In recent seasons, the grass fields were closed for weeks at a time due to rain, nearly half the spring season last year. That was a time when nobody could go on them. Not the community. Not baseball players. It meant canceled games. It meant it lost practices, and it meant families scrambling."
"This is not the old turf that's made with crumb rubber infill. These are state-of-the-art. We use natural cork and sand infill. We test for PFAS and other chemicals. We work closely with environmental agencies on every installation."
"This transforms it into one of the premier baseball and softball complexes in the Bay Area."
Crocker Amazon Park in San Francisco is undergoing a $45 million renovation project, funded 50-50 by the city and the Giants Community Fund. The project will expand baseball and softball fields from five to six, add batting cages, and create new public spaces including picnic areas, pathways, lighting, and two dog parks. Natural grass fields will be replaced with state-of-the-art artificial turf using cork and sand infill rather than crumb rubber. The city addresses concerns about grass field closures due to rain, which previously canceled games and practices. Environmental testing for PFAS and other chemicals is being conducted. However, community opposition exists regarding the removal of 31 trees during construction.
