13,000 People Attend Sunset Dunes Opening - Streetsblog San Francisco
Briefly

The official opening of Sunset Dunes Park in San Francisco drew an impressive turnout of 13,000 attendees, highlighting the park's significance to the community. Early visitor statistics indicated a 25% increase in park visitation before its opening day. Despite a few protestors and media claims of controversy, officials noted broad community support. Lucas Lux emphasized the park's emerging status as the city's third most popular, while Supervisor Joel Engardio referenced historical opposition to new infrastructure, underscoring the park's acceptance over time.
"This is second only to the Kaiser half-marathon in 2022," wrote spokesperson for the Friends of Sunset Dunes park Catie Stewart, in an email. This comes after Rec & Park's announcement that overall park visitation to Sunset Dunes was up by 25 percent even before the official opening.
"The enthusiasm from the community demonstrates just how integral the new park has already become for San Franciscans," said Lucas Lux, President of Friends of Sunset Dunes Park. "Sunset Dunes is the city's third most popular park, and if this new record is any indication, we suspect its popularity will only continue to grow."
District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio remarked on the historical opposition faced by infrastructure projects, comparing it to critiques of the Golden Gate Bridge, and humorously suggested, "Imagine the social media posts if they had Nextdoor in 1937."
In Streetsblog's view, at this point, after two propositions showing that the community overwhelmingly supports the park and given the record turnout, the claims of controversy may be overstated.
