The Caltrain crossing on Broadway in Burlingame, California, notorious for being the state's most dangerous, has recently upgraded safety measures with AI technology named RailSentry. This system uses camera and Lidar footage to monitor train crossings, alerting dispatch if obstacles are detected. RailSentry aims to reduce collisions and improve public safety. Local officials, including San Mateo County's president, support this technology as an affordable alternative to costly infrastructure upgrades that may take decades to fund. Following its success in Burlingame, further installations are considered at other crossings.
"Putting in RailSentry would help to keep the public safer, help to keep our trains moving safely through the area and that we could avoid further collisions," Lieberman said.
"They may never get funded, or it may take 40 to 50 years," Canepa said.
