The Altarena Playhouse in Alameda presents a rare performance of Tennessee Williams' 'Suddenly, Last Summer' until June 29. Artistic Director Katina Psihos Letheule heads the talented cast featuring Billie J. Simmons as Violet Venable and Thomas Hutchinson as Dr. Cukrowicz. The plot revolves around Venable's attempts to silence her niece, Catherine, who reveals uncomfortable truths about her deceased son. The play's themes address the manipulation of the powerful over the vulnerable. Meanwhile, the Berkeley Playhouse offers a production of 'The Sound of Music', which resonates with contemporary issues of authoritarianism, directed by Danny Cozart.
"Suddenly, Last Summer' is a tragically beautiful play. It addresses manipulation by the monied and powerful against those who are not," said Letheule.
The actors have the added task of performing surrounded by an audience on three sides. It's quite an art finding the correct balance so people behind you can hear..."
Director Danny Cozart stated, 'The Sound of Music'... is a true story that's nearly 100 years old, told through a 66-year-old musical about a family who chooses to stand up to the rise of authoritarianism in their own country."
