Harvey Milk Plaza in San Francisco is getting improvements to make it worthy of its namesake
Briefly

The Harvey Milk Plaza in San Francisco is being revamped to better serve as a community gathering space, in memory of its namesake, Harvey Milk. The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza organization aims to redesign the area, which has struggled for proper functionality since its inception. With input from the community, the memorial will honor Milk and other pivotal figures in LGBTQ+ history in the Castro. The project includes the installation of an elevator while preserving commemorative features, indicating a strong community commitment to inclusivity and historical recognition.
"It was never designed to be a plaza," says Brian Springfield, cofounder and executive director of Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza. "It doesn't function well as a gathering space. Almost since it was named Harvey Milk Plaza, the community has talked about reimagining it. ... This idea is finally going to happen."
"Our commitment all along has been to include and involve the grassroots of the community," Springfield says. "We decided we would honor not only Harvey but people throughout the history, past and present, of the Castro."
