'I'm afraid': Federal agents in Bay Area pushing immigrant community into hiding
"I'm a bit nervous and I'm afraid,"
"Yes, there are workers who decided not to come to work today because they are afraid because of everything that is going on with immigration,"
"We don't have papers, so we don't have any sort of protections,"
"Seeing what transpired this morning and it is very concerning. It is not something that we ever want to see in our community whether in San Francisco or anywhere in the Bay Area and we have seen it across the country. We have seen it in other places, and nobody wants to see that here,"
Federal agents arrived in the Bay Area, creating uncertainty and fear among many immigrants. Some San Francisco businesses closed and foot traffic decreased, especially in the Mission District. Numerous workers chose not to come to work; at least six co-workers of one worker stayed home and nearly all registered street vendors on a stretch of Mission Street stayed home except one. A construction worker said his boss told him to stay home. Several workers reported lacking papers and protections. Community leaders described the agents' arrival as very concerning and unwelcome in the community.
