People rallied in San Francisco in support of federal workers, with the first of several Bay Area rallies starting at 9 a.m. at the Phillip Burton Federal Building. Members and supporters of The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association attended, representing IRS, Postal Service, and other federal employees. Protesters cited federal job cuts, threats to unions, and concerns about DOGE involvement in Social Security and IRS tax returns. A union leader said the current environment is different because of continued attacks on federal employees and threats to agency shutdowns, which imperil workers' jobs. The San Francisco Labor Council marched from 16th and Mission to Dolores Park.
People took to the streets of San Francisco on Monday to rally in support of federal workers. The first of several rallies across the Bay Area started at 9 a.m. The first rally happened at the Phillip Burton Federal Building consisting of members and supporters of "The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association." Some of the workers represented include employees of the IRS, Postal Service, and more. They say they're protesting against federal job cuts, threats against unions and DOGE getting involved with things like Social Security and IRS Tax returns.
One union representative we spoke with said that while Labor protests happen each year, this year is different. "We still have Trump, still attacking federal employees, and right now he's still trying to shut down agencies. We are also under attack because there's employees who's still trying to hang in there and keep their job, but they are threatening to lose their job," said Alphonzo Breland, National Treasury Employees Union, Chapter 20 president.
