After encountering legal challenges to rename Oakland airport to 'San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport', officials are now proposing 'Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport.' The intent behind these name changes is to attract more passengers, although officials from San Francisco objected to the use of their city's name. A court ruling recently blocked the original name, prompting the Port of Oakland to seek a new identifier while still pursuing legal action for their preferred name. Aviation director Craig Simon emphasized the need for a speedy implementation of the new name.
According to the Chronicle, the Port of Oakland is attempting now to change the name of Oakland airport again, this time trying the name Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport.
In the meantime, however the Port needs to implement a new name for OAK while we wait for final legal resolution, Port of Oakland director of aviation Craig Simon says in the letter.
