San Jose homeless advocates create support network - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

As San Jose intensifies efforts to dismantle homeless encampments, the Rapid Engagement Support Team (REST) has mobilized to assist affected individuals. REST provides support such as recovering property lost during sweeps, information on rights, resources for securing housing, and meals. The group, comprising local organizations, is seeking funds to establish a hotline for rapid assistance during sweeps. Meanwhile, Mayor Matt Mahan's aggressive policies, including arresting homeless individuals who refuse shelter and increasing police presence, aim to clear encampments like those in Columbus Park, prompting community concerns and advocacy efforts.
The mayor has essentially declared war on homeless people, and it is important for unhoused people to be supported quickly by us first responders who can bring them what they need.
REST is modeled after the Rapid Response Network, a network of volunteers providing information and assistance during U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) raids.
The city is also upping the ante on sweeps, clearing out encampments by the waterways and installing concrete K-rails to prevent re-encampment.
REST aids with recovering a person's property after a sweep, providing information on how to get back towed vehicles and educating individuals on their rights.
