San Jose has initiated the clearing of a large homeless encampment in Columbus Park, estimated to house about 370 people and 120 vehicles. The city has started a vehicle buyback program, allowing residents to secure temporary housing without the fear of towing. A new motel has opened, providing 42 beds, with more facilities expected to accommodate all residents who seek shelter. The mayor emphasizes the need for individuals to utilize these shelters for their safety and advocates for more temporary solutions to homelessness while exploring shelter options without curfews and deadliness.
Vehicles with signs placed on them that said 'Do not tow or abate' were left alone, indicating the vehicles will be purchased by the city through a new buyback program and the owners will move into temporary housing.
We're offering safe, private, individual, low barrier rooms without a curfew, without a deadline, for every person in the park. We need them to choose to come indoors for their safety and for the good of the broader community that deserves to be able to be in that park again.
