What will it take to convert downtown San Francisco offices into housing?
Briefly

San Francisco has seen a significant decline in commercial real estate, with over a third of its office buildings sitting empty five years after the pandemic. Despite various incentives aimed at encouraging office-to-housing conversions, such as Proposition C, there is minimal progress. Just one conversion project is in the works, and another was canceled due to financing difficulties. City officials recognize the urgent need to revitalize downtown, emphasizing the importance of transforming these spaces to cater to residential needs, despite the complex challenges involved.
"You need to find a reuse for old office buildings, but converting office to residential isn't as easy as it sounds," Bill Fulton stated, highlighting the complexity of such transformations.
"We have to and must respond to the emergency at the moment, which is the lack of activity downtown," said District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter regarding the necessity of repurposing office spaces.
