William 'Buck' Myers, a 99-year-old veteran of the WWII Battle of Iwo Jima, reflects on his traumatic experiences as the 80th anniversary approaches. He remembers the sounds and smells of war vividly, especially the moment he was hit by shrapnel. Following the battle, he reconnected with fellow veteran Arthur Gavlock through Gavlock's granddaughter, Holly Fantaskey Jermyn. Their bond, which lasted until Gavlock's death in 2010, was celebrated during a reunion on the anniversary, showcasing the lasting friendships forged in war. Myers is also a proud Philadelphia Eagles fan, inspiring future military generations in his family.
"It has a certain distinct smell to it," Myers recalls, reflecting on the intense experiences during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.
"I'll never forget it, I'll tell you the truth," he said, describing how memories from the battle continue to wake him at times.
After a long-lost connection, Myers and Gavlock reunited 60 years later, highlighting a bond that remained strong until Gavlock's passing in 2010.
On the 80th anniversary of the battle, Myers and Gavlock's granddaughter, Holly Fantaskey Jermyn, met to share their story and honor their shared history.
