Shildt's departure creates a managerial vacancy with a division rival that could prompt Hundley to consider the Padres job despite never coaching or managing. Hundley served as a special assistant with the Texas Rangers, backed up Posey in San Francisco for two seasons, and won the 2017 Willie Mac Award.
