"the grind of the baseball season has taken a severe toll on me mentally, physically and emotionally."
"it's becoming a widely held expectation the job is Hundley's if he is ready to accept it."
Buster Posey has targeted former backup catcher Nick Hundley as the preferred choice for the San Francisco Giants' managerial opening. Mike Shildt unexpectedly retired as San Diego Padres manager, citing the season's grind taking a severe toll mentally, physically and emotionally. Shildt's departure creates a managerial vacancy with a division rival that could prompt Hundley to consider the Padres job despite never coaching or managing. Hundley served as a special assistant with the Texas Rangers, backed up Posey in San Francisco for two seasons, and won the 2017 Willie Mac Award. Giants insiders and reporters had widely expected Hundley to be the Giants' first choice.
