San Jose's City Council has approved $1 million in security improvements for its hockey arenas, SAP Center and Sharks Ice, following a rise in attendance. The upgrades include vehicle barriers, access controls, and key card systems, with funds split between the two venues in preparation for the 2025-26 hockey season. Arena authority executive director Chris Morrisey emphasized the commitment to fan safety, stating that the necessary enhancements reflect a forward-thinking approach to security. Additionally, a new pilot program has been introduced to manage unauthorized vendors outside SAP Center.
The Sharks do an excellent job right now of keeping people secure. The systems they have in place, along with the police presence for events, is very strong.
It's important... for fans to feel safe - but also to keep danger far away.
