JAXA and Germany's DLR performed the first collaboration between independently developed robots on the ISS, involving JEM Inboard Portable Video Camera System Demonstration Unit 2 (Int-Ball2) and CIMON. Int-Ball2, a drone controlled by JAXA staff, takes photos inside the ISS. CIMON, with AI capabilities, can follow voice commands. Astronaut Takuya Onishi instructed CIMON to command Int-Ball2 to search for an item. This successful collaboration demonstrates inter-robot communication and lays the groundwork for future human-robot cooperative efforts in space missions.
The knowledge gained from this mission is expected to form the basis for efficient collaborative operations between astronauts and robots in future manned space activities.
Int-Ball2 is a drone that flies inside the ISS. JAXA ground staff can control it remotely and use it to take photos that would otherwise require an astronaut's attention.
CIMON understands astronaut instructions, converts them into commands for Int-Ball2, and transmits the instructions to the Japanese bot.
This was the first time two robots independently developed by different organizations have worked together in orbit.
