Kilauea, located on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii, has blown dozens of times since the 1950s. In fact, it erupted practically uninterrupted from 1983 to 2018 along its East Rift Zoneonly ending when the floor of the Puu Oo crater collapsed, draining the lava lake at the volcano's summit."

On December 6 lava fountains in the Halemaumau crater at Kilauea's summit spewed more than 1,000 feet into the air, sending molten rock, boulders and ash into a U.S. Geological Survey webcam and taking it offline. The eruption is part of a long, intermittent event that began on December 23, 2024. Kilauea sits on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii and has erupted dozens of times since the 1950s. The volcano erupted practically uninterrupted from 1983 to 2018 along its East Rift Zone until the Puu Oo crater floor collapsed and drained the summit lava lake, which previously allowed lava to pour through neighborhoods and destroy hundreds of homes. A 2019 paper found that fissures inside Kilauea drained a relatively small amount of magma from the reservoir and ultimately set off the summit caldera collapse.
