"We are taking steps to restructure and establish an appropriate size to ensure future success."
"This week's action, while not easy, is essential to securing JPL's future by creating a leaner infrastructure, focusing on our core technical capabilities, maintaining fiscal discipline, and positioning us to compete in the evolving space ecosystem - all while continuing to deliver on our vital work for NASA and the nation."
"I believe this is a stable, supportable staffing level moving forward."
JPL will eliminate approximately 550 positions as part of a workforce realignment intended to create a leaner infrastructure and focus on core technical capabilities. Director Dave Gallagher said the workforce reduction began with a reorganization in July and is not related to the government shutdown. The cut follows earlier reductions in November 2024 under former director Laurie Leshin. JPL is managed by Caltech and relies heavily on NASA funding; budget tightening could further affect operations. The layoffs threaten ongoing engineering projects by risking missed launch windows and could weaken long-term U.S. competitiveness in space exploration.
