"The atomic ensemble time scale at our Boulder campus has failed due to a prolonged utility power outage."
"is that the Boulder Internet Time Services no longer have an accurate time reference."
"I will attempt to disable them [the generators] to avoid disseminating incorrect time,"
"strong evidence one of the crucial generators has failed. In the downstream path is the primary signal distribution chain, including to the Boulder Internet Time Service."
A prolonged utility power outage caused the atomic ensemble time scale at the Boulder campus to fail. The outage removed the accurate reference for the Boulder Internet Time Services, degrading authoritative NTP timing outputs used for system synchronization. Backup generators kept servers operational but risked disseminating incorrect time. A staffer attempted to disable the generators to prevent propagation of inaccurate time, but site access was restricted due to severe storms. Evidence indicates one crucial generator failed and the primary signal distribution chain to the Internet Time Service was affected. Separate clocks on another generator could permit re-alignment once the site stabilizes.
